Perhaps six or so weeks prior to his death I was accompanying Mike at home and chatting. I was sitting on the couch, Mike lying down, resting on the floor.
He mentioned to me quietly that one of his friends had suggested a trust fund be set up for Lucas and Emily and he wondered what I thought of the idea. Mike was unsure. He said that many of his friends had asked how they might help him and he didn't know what to say to them.Perhaps the trust fund might be a response? At this point Mike became tearful and began to express his concerns for Sarah and Lucas and Emily when he was gone;concern for their financial well being.
The trust fund did get established. Dave Gunasekera deserves enormous credit for setting up the fund structure.There would be no trust fund without Dave's efforts. The many many friends of Mike and Sarah are to be thanked for their kindness and generosity. Sarah has peace of mind regarding the costs of education for Lucas and Emily as a result. What the trust has done, and will do, is immeasurable in terms of the well being that Mike so wished for his family.
Another trust fund was also established for Sarah and Lucas and Emily, that being the wealth of friends that continue to love and support them in so many ways. As Sarah's parents ,Carolyn and I often share with one another the appreciation we have for Sarah and Mike's wonderful friends....their continued thoughtfulness and caring. Their friendship eases the weight of Sarah's sadness, giving her energy to share with Lucas and Emily and others.
