In March, Tom wrote a wonderfully perceptive post summarizing the range of Mike’s smiles, from the beaming ear-to-ear “happy smile” to the evolving smirk, which in my memories was usually accompanied by a nudge with the shoulder or elbow.
The post reminded me of the smiles Mike expressed in some of the first pictures that were taken when Lucas and Emily were born. I don’t know quite how to characterize them relative to the others but suspect they were probably a mixture of fear, pride, wonderment and overwhelming love.
I have attached the pictures that Mike sent with Emily and Lucas’ birth announcements in 2006 and 2009. What a beautiful family – it’s easy to see why Mike usually had the ear-to-ear “happy smile” when he talked about his family.
In case anyone forgot, the PS note in Lucas’ birth announcement reminded everyone that the bald guy was mike ;)

Sarah gave birth to a healthy 7 lb 2 oz baby girl around 11 am this morning. All are well with much family in attendance. She is yet to
be named but has already given Lucas a run for his money in the hair department.
