Mischievous Mike

I met Mike on the very first day of medical school in 1998. We were part of the same orientation group (along with Danielle Froese) and we all seemed to get along from the very start and spent a lot of time together over the first few weeks of school. Later that week, I also met my wife for the first time during another orientation event. Lisa and I did not spend very much time together but, instead, spent a lot of time looking at each other from across the classrooms. By Thanksgiving, we were dating, Since we had both arrived at medical school in long-term but doomed relationships, we initially felt that we should be discreet about our new relationship. So, for a several months, it was days with Mike and Danielle and nights with Lisa. Nobody knew......

I don’t know when Mike started to suspect some funny business but he chose an interesting time to ask us when we ‘actually’ got together. During a speech at our wedding reception! With a huge smirk on his face, in front of our families and friends (who we thought were equally ‘in the dark’), he asked us to clarify when exactly we had started our relationship. We all had a good laugh and Mike’s speech was a highlight of a very special day.

It was classic Mike - goofy and embarrassing without ever being mean. It made him a great friend and it made him a great teacher and physician too.

The picture is of Mike giving that little speech at the wedding and another one taken afterwards.
